I found out about this super interesting company the other day from one of my favorite Swedish bloggers, Frida Ramstedt at Trendenser. They're called Swedish Rags and they make custom rag rugs in simple and classic designs that they ship world wide. If only I had known about this company a few months ago when I was searching high and low for new rugs for my house! These would have been the perfect style. Classically simple, modern and with a nice nostalgic nod to the traditional handmade rugs I put my feet on growing up.
The way it works is they make smaller patches of rugs from cotton rags and linen warp, each measuring 31.5x31.5 inches. When you make an order, they sew patches together to make the rug in the color, style and size you want. Each square can be sewn on in a few different ways, creating different patterns. Take a look below and you'll see what I mean.
I just love the honest materials and the genius way of making a flexible and customizable product out of essentially one building block, making a modern product using tradition. Beautifully done!
